US President Donald Trump will meet Kim Jong Un, leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), on June 12 in Singapore, Trump announced in a tweet on Thursday.
Earlier, Trump said a date and location had already been set for his summit with Kim and will be announced soon, adding that he was expecting "very, very good things" to come out of it. He added that "this will be a great thing for the world," in a comment last week.
Trump has previously stressed that the summit will be an important meeting for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
On the heels of the Kim-Moon summit
The announcement came just two weeks after Kim's historic summit with Republic of Korea (ROK) President Moon Jae-in at the military demarcation line, inside the border village of Panmunjom which divides the two countries.
The two leaders agreed to work to rid the peninsula of nuclear weapons.
This, in turn, made Kim the first leader from the DPRK to step foot inside the ROK since the Korean War.
Drastic changes have taken place over the month, as both sides made efforts to alleviate the tension on the Korean Peninsula.
In a symbolic gesture, the DPRK moved its clocks forward by 30 minutes on May 5 to match the time in the ROK, following the inter-Korean summit.
Ahead of the much-awaited meeting with Kim, Trump is scheduled to host his ROK counterpart Moon Jae-in for talks at the White House on May 22.
China supports denuclearization
Earlier this week, Kim Jong Un made his second visit to China, meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the city of Dalian, Liaoning Province in northeast China.
Kim said the main goal of his visit was to inform President Xi of the regional situation.
Earlier, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed optimism on the upcoming Kim-Trump summit, stating that he hoped they could achieve substantial progress.
Wang also noted that China fully backs DPRK's efforts to achieve the goal of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.
