Jon Gelleran, a veterinarian in Denver, Colorado, US, has set up the "The Street Dog Coalition", a mobile street veterinary clinic, to give free veterinary services to pets of homeless people.

The coalition is staffed by volunteer veterinarians from all over the US. Veterinarians gave the pets free medical care and other services at the center, including microchips and vaccines.

The animals were also tested for, and if the result found negative, they were given heartworm medication. The veterinarians also gave general examinations for all the animals.

More than 100 dogs and cats received free medical treatment thanks to volunteer veterinarians at "The Street Dog Coalition".

Thirty-four undocumented migrants, including at least five children, were rescued by the Turkish coast guard on Friday, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency.
They were stranded on a small island called the Bogaz off the coast of Cesme, in the province of Izmir.
Coast guard teams and helicopters were dispatched to evacuate the migrants. One migrant was reportedly still missing on the island. Search and rescue operations are underway.
The group was believed to have gotten stranded while trying to cross to the Greek island of Chios illegally, although details are unknown.

A Russian teenage activist was among four people detained after she staged a protest outside the soccer World Cup stadium in St. Petersburg on Tuesday, lying down in a bloodied shirt in what she said was a bid to draw attention to the country’s problems.

Russia has pledged to hold a safe and secure World Cup, putting on its best face to host the world’s most prestigious soccer tournament.

“We wanted to draw attention to the fact that no matter what you show foreigners, things on the inside aren’t that good and pretty,” 16-year-old Lika Petrovskaya told Reuters.

“No matter the pretty things that are shown, people in Russia are still suffering.”

OVD-Info, a human rights organization that monitors detentions, said that three other activists, including two minors, had been detained along with Petrovskaya outside the stadium.

The local branch of the Interior Ministry could not immediately be reached for comment.

Petrovskaya lay for a few minutes at the foot of a statue of Zabivaka, the wolf that serves as the tournament’s mascot, outside the St. Petersburg venue where Sweden beat Switzerland 1-0 in their round of 16 match on Tuesday.

She was not detained the first time she lay down by the statue despite the presence of security officers, and voluntarily stepped away when tourists asked her to move so they could take a picture. But she said she was detained by police when she returned for a second attempt.

Petrovskaya said one of the issues she was protesting was the imprisonment of Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, who is being held in a Siberian jail.

Sentsov was sentenced to 20 years in a maximum security prison in 2015 after being found guilty of setting fire to two offices in Crimea, including one belonging to Russia’s ruling political party, after Moscow annexed the territory from Ukraine. He was also convicted of plotting to blow up a statue.

Last month, Russian activists held a covert protest on a central Moscow street popular with World Cup fans to call on the Kremlin to release Sentsov.

In Aldaia, Valencia, Spain,  agents of the National Police have arrested a woman for allegedly stabbing her 16-year-old daughter in the back. The assault took place in the presence of another minor, the youngest daughter.

Apparently, the mother and her daughter began an  argument  in the room of the child that took them to the kitchen. There and in the presence of  her other daughter, the mother allegedly stabbed the 16-year-old girl in the back .

The elder daughter called for emergencies , and health personnel and police officers appeared at the scene. The victim was taken to a hospital and is  out of danger . The mother was  arrested , as reported by police sources.

Hundreds of rural communities in six out of the ten regions of Ghana now have access to clean water thanks to the assistance from the Chinese government.

The government of China constructed 1,000 boreholes for communities to support efforts  to bring clean water to Ghanaians.

Residents in Nana-Boami, a small farming community about 63 km north-west of the capital Accra say they were forced to use a pond of creamy water overgrown with water weeds with cattle as their only source of water.

“But all that has now changed for the good”, says local resident Eric Kwaku Mantey.

Although Ghana achieved more than 88 percent nationwide coverage of clean water under the previous Millennium Development Goals by the end of 2015, evidence on the ground was a far cry from the reported data, as most of these communities depended on running water which turned dark brown for most parts of the year due to heavy rains and dry-up in the dried season.

“This project is part of China’s 1,000 borehole project to support the government of Ghana. The project is in six regions. The beneficiary communities are selected by government of Ghana, but normally every region gets about 160 boreholes,” Huang Xianzhou, Project Manager of Zhongmei Engineering Group Limited, said in an interview.

He added that the project was progressing steadily and due for completion on schedule by the end of this year. Huang expressed appreciation for the way the government of Ghana and locals cooperated with his company to implement the project.

Linda Alhassan, Headmistress of the Santramor Primary School in the Suhum Municipal Area, explained how water scarcity had become a thing of the past due to the intervention by the Chinese government. She said that the nightmare of school children going in search of water for hours and came to school late had come to a halt.

“In fact, as this borehole has come, it has helped us a lot. It has cut down on the water-borne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera,” she added.

Jasper Quarshie, the Community Water and Sanitation Agency Municipal Technician Engineer for the Suhum District, whose district alone benefited from 10 of the China-aided boreholes, described the intervention as timely.

“Things have improved a lot. In fact I have one of the communities where their water was as dark as cocoa beverage. So when this borehole is built there, they are enjoying it. You can see their children are now going to school early, they don’t have to lose precious education time searching for water, they can now spend that time in school.”

Russian politicians are sending controversial messages to women in their country. A few days ago Tamara Pletnyova, in charge of the parliamentary commission for family and women in Russia, issued a statement in which she  asked women not to have sex with foreigners of another race , as they could end up as single mothers with children of race mixed, something that, he said, is undesirable because it complicates life. The policy spoke in response to the so-called "children of the Olympics", a wave of pregnancies that occurred in Moscow in 1980, when there was not much access to contraceptives. As is evident, the meeting of cultures always has a component of sexual attraction.

The controversial comment has to do with its allusion to mix the race. Pletnyova said that being of mixed race makes the life of the child difficult, because it increases the possibility that it is abandoned and that the mother is single. It is necessary to clarify that Pletnyova suggested that children of mixed race suffer discrimination by the conditions of the society, did not say that said children are inferior; Either way, your comments are problematic. The Libyan immigration department on Wednesday held a Ramadan Iftar feast for nearly 1,300 illegal immigrants inside a reception centre in the capital Tripoli.

The Iftar feast, an evening meal where Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset, was also attended by the head of the department, Mohamed Beshr, as well as a number of diplomats to Libya.

“This Iftar feast was intended to create a home atmosphere for the inmates, and to spread love and brotherhood during this holly month. The event also provides opportunity for the diplomats to interact with the immigrants of their respective countries,” Beshr said.

Beshr further revealed that all the immigrants, Muslims and non-Muslims were invited to the feast, and more reception centers are expected to host similar feasts.

Husni Abu-Ayana, the head of the information office of the anti-illegal immigration department, told Xinhua the feast was “intended to make the immigrants feel as if they are with their own families.”

Immigration reception centres in Libya are overcrowded with illegal immigrants. The Libyan authorities are now calling on international organizations for more support and assistance to improve the living conditions of the centres.

Libya is known as a preferred point of departure for illegal immigrants hoping to cross the Mediterranean toward European shores because of insecurity and chaos in the country following the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi.

A dreadful event has taken place in a French detention center. A young man has been brutally tortured for an entire night by his three cellmates , after they discovered that he had visited a gay content website via mobile phone. He was suffocated, brutally beaten, a tympanum was punctured, his head and eyebrows were shaved, he was forced to ingest excrement ... The next morning, the young man was admitted to the infirmary where he reported to the prison guards what happened. They proceeded to arrest the three cellmates, who face charges of torture and barbarism.

The detention center in the French city of Troyes is sadly known for its precarious conditions and the overcrowding of prisoners. But the events that occurred last Saturday, April 28, have shocked the public.

A young prisoner of 24 years, of Guyanese origin, who was serving a sentence for small smuggling of cocaine, shared a cell with three other prisoners, two of them aged 19 and the remaining 27. Apparently, the young Guyana borrowed the mobile phone of one of them and surfed the network for a few moments. Subsequently, the owner of the phone discovered that he had visited a gay content website and told his other two companions.

The three proceeded to tie the young man to a chair and began what would be a long torture session that lasted from Saturday afternoon until early Sunday morning. They simulated that they were going to kill him by suffocating him, beat him savagely, put a pen in his ear and punctured his eardrum, shaved his head and eyebrows, forced him to eat excrement, humiliated him, forced him to play the role of maid ... Also, they recorded with one of the mobile phones the tortures and humiliations to then spread the video over the network.

Once dawn, the young Guyanese was attended by the guards, who led him to the infirmary, where he was hospitalized for 9 days. There he related what happened, so they proceeded to the arrest of the three cellmates , who respond to the names of Camel, Imed and Ayoub. The three face charges of torture and acts of barbarism, and have been interned in three different prisons.

The deputy of Guyanese origin Gabriel Serville , from the Group of the Democratic and Republican Left, has strongly condemned the homophobic aggression and has reiterated the need to increase awareness campaigns against homophobia, especially among young people, as well as to strengthen legislation for combat all forms of discrimination.

At least six people are feared dead in a gold mine in Migori County after a tunnel collapsed.

The victims were buried alive in Macalder Mines in Nyatike sub-county, located 40 kilometres from Migori Town.

It is suspected that heavy rains which have pounded the region for several days eventually forced the walls of the cave to give way. Several people working deep inside the tunnels of the mine were suddenly entrapped.

Police from Nyatike, who rushed to the scene, were unable to evacuate the victims due to lack of relevant equipment.

The miners usually descend more than 100 feet below the surface to look for gold. Mines in Nyatike have claimed many lives every year but that does not deter the residents from looking for gold.

But some gold miners in the region have quit the trade due to the increasing number of deaths in the tunnels.

The miners are worried by the tragedies that usually occur in the mines in Nyatike and hope that the Kenyan government will regulate the mining practices in the region and introduce safer practices.

FORMER President Robert Mugabe has allegedly lost $10 000 to one of his accountants at Gushungo Holdings.

The accused, Peter Bhibhi (34), was not asked to plead to the theft charge when he appeared before Harare magistrate Tilda Mazhande, who remanded him to May 24 on $100 bail.

Bhibhi, who is represented by Lucky Dube, was employed by Gushungo Holdings as Mwenevazvo Estates accountant.

Mugabe is represented by his head of security, Maxwell Murangwa.



Allegations are that between January 14 and 31 this year, Gushungo Holdings tasked Bhibhi to sell potatoes to walk-in customers, who had no bags to package the produce.
The customers were asked to bring their own bags for a refundable fee of 25 cents per bag.

It is alleged during that period, Bhibhi misrepresented to the company that customers had brought in 42 275 empty bags, prejudicing the firm of $10 568 and nothing was recovered.

The State alleges the offence came to light when Mugabe’s security team checked the records and discovered that there were no documents at the main gate to the estate or estate stores reflecting movement of empty potato packs in and out of the farm.

A report was made to the police, leading to Bhibhi’s arrest.

In another matter, the State yesterday said it had lined up 10 witnesses to testify in the case where Mugabe recently lost over 119 computers and accessories to a member of the Presidential Guard, Pepukai Zvakavapano, during a break-in at Zimbabwe House.

Magistrate Josephine Sande postponed the matter to May 3 after Zvakavapano’s lawyer, Tinashe Mbala, consented to the postponement.

In commemoration of World Malaria Day 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners are calling on all concerned parties to be ready to end the scourge of malaria.

This call comes against the backdrop of a global rise in malaria cases for the first time in ten years. The theme of this year’s effort is “We’re Ready to Beat Malaria- Are you?”

According to the latest, ‘’World Malaria Report’’ released in November 2017, 216 million cases of malaria globally were reported in 2016. That’s up from 211 million cases in 2015. The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 445,000 in 2016.

WHO stats also reveal that in areas with high transmission of malaria, children under 5 are particularly susceptible to infection, illness and death. More than two thirds (70%) of all malaria deaths occur in this age group.

Despite the reduction of under 5 malaria deaths from 440,000 in 2010 to 285,000 in 2016, malaria still remains a major killer of children under 5.

Half the world is still at risk from malaria with some countries registering an increase of over 20 percent in malaria cases between 2015 and 2016. Currently, Nigeria has the  highest amount, accounting for 27 percent of global malaria cases.

In the Eastern Mediterranean Region, the number of malaria cases increased from 3.9 million in 2015 to 4.3 million in 2016 with 8200 deaths.  Ninety-five percent (95%) of confirmed malaria cases are reported from 4 countries in the region and 6 countries are at high risk of malaria but are at the stage of burden reduction.  However, two countries in the region, Iran and Saudi Arabia, are both close to eliminating malaria infections in their countries.

But without urgent action, the WHO says most of the major gains in the fight against malaria will be for not.

Together with diagnosis and treatment, WHO recommends a package of proven prevention approaches, including insecticide treated nets, spraying indoor walls with insecticides, and preventive medicines for the most vulnerable groups: pregnant women and children under 5 years old.

The WHO also continues to call for greater investment from national resources and also donors from the infected areas  as well as expanded coverage of proven tools to prevent, diagnose and treat malaria.

It’s expected to cost $1.4 billion USD over the next three years to fight the disease.

This year’s World Malaria Day comes on the heels of two major malaria events – the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting, where UK Prime Minister Theresa May and other Commonwealth leaders made a commitment to halve malaria burden across 53 member countries by 2023 in response to the London Malaria Summit.

The United States has always used cruel measures to treat prisoners. Abuse became common after the September 11 attacks of 2001 that triggered President George. W. Bush's war on terror, which subsequently led to him, authorizing a method of extorting confessions through torture called "enhanced interrogation techniques".

These cruel methods included: prohibition of sleep, imprisonment in confined spaces, and waterboarding. Among these, the most infamous was probably waterboarding. Waterboarding involved using a cloth to cover a prisoner's face, and repeatedly pouring water over it, making it difficult for the prisoner to breathe and giving a feeling similar to suffocation.

Abu Zubaydah, a prominent past leader of Al-Qaida, was arrested in Pakistan in 2002 and held in a secret prison in Thailand for 47 days after he was suspected by the US of being involved in terrorist attacks. At the time, the head of the prison was the current CIA director— Gina Haspel and whilst she was in charge of the secret CIA jail, she was believed to have used torture techniques on inmates.

There were many prisoners in Thailand's jail, however, Abu Zubaydah was perhaps the most famous. During his detention, Abu Zubaydah was a victim of so-called "enhanced interrogation techniques," as termed by the Bush administration. Officers did not interrogate him but instead tortured him through techniques such as waterboarding, the result of which, left him with long lasting psychological issues.

In addition to these cases from secret prisons in Thailand, the United States has also abused prisoners in its own base of Guantanamo, through sleep deprivation and long-term solitary confinement. The abuse of Abu Ghraib shocked the world when a report by the United States CBS revealed that the United States had allowed prisoners to be tied together naked. It was only after the CBS published pictures of the incident that people were aware of how brutal the US treated its inmates.
