Verizon sells Flickr to SmugMug

Flickr , the once popular site for sharing and storing digital photos, has been purchased by Verizon's rival SmugMug  , USA Today reported Friday .

SmugMug did not disclose the details of the agreement on its website or USA Today , but Flickr came to Verizon as part of the assets of Yahoo , a firm that acquired in July 2016 for almost US $ 4,500 million. Yahoo had purchased Flickr in 2005 for US $ 35 million.

Founded in 2004, in its heyday Flickr had become the first destination for lovers of photography. However, the platform did not adapt quickly to the increase in the use of cell phones to take, upload, store and share photos, leaving behind apps like Instagram and Google Photos .

According to USA Today , in March 2018, Flickr added only 13.1 million unique users per month. SmugMug, a private company founded in 2002, does not share the number of subscribers it has, although it was said that the company will keep Flickr as an independent platform.
