The 2018 World Press Freedom Index reports Ghana has the best atmosphere for media personnel in Africa.

Ghana dethroned Namibia who topped in last year’s ranking.

Globally, Ghana placed 23rd out of 180 countries on this year’s list. The country is regarded as one of the most democratic countries in Africa and Chapter 12 of its 1992 constitution guarantees media pluralism and independence.

Eritrea came in at 179th , Africa’s worst placement.  For the past 26 years, Eritrea has been a dictatorship in which there is no room for freely reported news and information. At least 11 journalists are currently detained without being charged or tried.

Sudan, Egypt, Burundi, Equatorial Guinea, Djibouti and Somalia were among several other African nations that placed near the bottom the list.

The ranking, published annually by Reporters Without Borders since 2002, is used to measure the level of media freedom in 180 countries including the level of pluralism, media independence and respect for the safety and freedom of journalists

The report goes on to say that only a very small number of media outlets provide good news coverage. A third of the media are owned by the state or by businessmen linked to the government.

The lack of transparency that characterizes the media industry is compounded by a flawed regulatory system that tends to limit the freedom to inform. Thanks to extensive use of mobile phones, a great deal of news and information circulates online.

Criminal code provisions penalizing “false news” are sometimes abused in order to harass journalists but journalists are rarely arrested or imprisoned.
More than 160 children have been rescued from baby factory in Nigeria

More than 160 children have been rescued from a “baby factory” and two unregistered orphanages in Nigeria’s main city, Lagos, BBC reports an official to say.

The Commissioner for Youths and Social Development in Lagos State Agboola Dabiri revealed that Some of the babies and children that were freed had been sexually abused.

It is not uncommon for Nigerian authorities to raid “baby factories”.

In some cases, unmarried pregnant women are promised healthcare, only for their children to be taken away. In others, women are raped and made pregnant.

The babies can be sold for adoption, used for child labour, trafficked to Europe for prostitution or killed for ritual purposes.

In February, Lagos police told local media they had uncovered a case where a pregnant woman went to a private home to have her baby delivered – only for the baby to be taken away and sold.

Speaking after the latest raids, Dabiri said 100 girls and 62 boys had been rescued.

“The children and teenagers rescued from the ‘baby factory’ and homes were placed at government-approved homes for care and protection,” he added.

In 2013, 17 pregnant teenagers and 11 babies were rescued from a house in south-eastern Imo state. The girls said they had been raped by one man.

In 2012, a UK judge raised concerns about “desperate childless parents” being caught up in baby-selling scams in Nigeria.

There was evidence that women were going to Nigeria seeking fertility treatment, then being sold unwanted babies, the judge said.
FORMER President Robert Mugabe has allegedly lost $10 000 to one of his accountants at Gushungo Holdings.

Former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has allegedly lost $10 000

The accused, Peter Bhibhi (34), was not asked to plead to the theft charge when he appeared before Harare magistrate Tilda Mazhande, who remanded him to May 24 on $100 bail.

Bhibhi, who is represented by Lucky Dube, was employed by Gushungo Holdings as Mwenevazvo Estates accountant.

Mugabe is represented by his head of security, Maxwell Murangwa.

Allegations are that between January 14 and 31 this year, Gushungo Holdings tasked Bhibhi to sell potatoes to walk-in customers, who had no bags to package the produce.
The customers were asked to bring their own bags for a refundable fee of 25 cents per bag.

It is alleged during that period, Bhibhi misrepresented to the company that customers had brought in 42 275 empty bags, prejudicing the firm of $10 568 and nothing was recovered.

The State alleges the offence came to light when Mugabe’s security team checked the records and discovered that there were no documents at the main gate to the estate or estate stores reflecting movement of empty potato packs in and out of the farm.

A report was made to the police, leading to Bhibhi’s arrest.

Linda Gadzikwa appeared for the State.

In another matter, the State yesterday said it had lined up 10 witnesses to testify in the case where Mugabe recently lost over 119 computers and accessories to a member of the Presidential Guard, Pepukai Zvakavapano, during a break-in at Zimbabwe House.

Magistrate Josephine Sande postponed the matter to May 3 after Zvakavapano’s lawyer, Tinashe Mbala, consented to the postponement.
Gmail is experimenting with an immense redesign that brings a lot of new features. Here we tell you how to get the new version of Gmail right now.

How to get the new Gmail right now

Google just announced a major update to Gmail by adding new features such as notifications of important messages, a confidential mode and better offline support  .

Not all features will be available at launch. The features that will be immediately available include the new design, smart answers, the option to mute emails and a new tool panel that is located on the right side of the Gmail interface for easy access to Tasks or Tasks (which has also been redesigned) and Calendar.

The process to get the new design and new features depends on the type of Google account you have.

Regular Gmail users

You can enable the new design and new features by clicking on  Configurations  (the notched wheel in the upper right corner) and then selecting the option Try the new Gmail . If you later want to go back to the previous version, you can go to the same place and select "Go back to the classic version of Gmail". This handy Gmail guide  can help you.

G Suite users

If you have a Gmail account that you use for work or school, then it will be the administrator of the account who will have to enable the new Gmail through the Early Adopter Program.

The administrator will have to use the Google Admin console and opt for the new Gmail. This means, unfortunately, that getting access to new Gmail is out of your hands.

The technology giant earned nearly $ 12 billion in revenue in its first fiscal quarter - nearly 50 percent more than the same quarter last year.

The scandals of Facebook did not affect its quarterly income

Maybe the bruises Facebook received this quarter will heal soon.

Despite the Cambridge Analytica scandal , the social networking giant made an income of US $ 11,970 million during its first fiscal quarter of 2018, surpassing the expectations of Wall Street analysts who expected US $ 11,400 million. These revenues represent almost 50 percent more than the same quarter a year ago.

"Despite facing significant challenges, our community and our business started strong in 2018," Zuckerberg said in the statement where  Facebook announced its quarterly results . "We are taking a broader view of our responsibility [towards the community] and investing to ensure that our services are used for good, but we must also continue to develop new tools to help people connect, strengthen our communities, and bring more to the world".

Advertisers have not left Facebook maybe because users have not either. The social network shared that it had 1,450 million daily users and 2,200 million per month, which in both cases represents an increase of 13 percent compared to the same period a year ago.

Facebook executives did not share with analysts if there was a change in the amount of time users spend on the network after the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Facebook made a profit of US $ 4,988 million during the three months ended March 31, which is 37 percent more than the US $ 3,064 million of the first quarter of 2017.
The company is committed to increasing profit margins by focusing on the most popular trucks and SUVs in the future.

Ford will eliminate the Focus, Fusion and Fiesta models in the United States

Ford is taking production cuts in the United States seriously in the next few years, and that's bad news for anything other than a truck or SUV. In fact, it seems that the Mustang and the upcoming Focus Active are the only cars that will survive this decision. There will be no Fiesta. There will be no Fusion. Nor will there be Focus (regular).

This news is part of Ford's "fitness" plan, outlined by Chief Executive Jim Hackett last year, in which he said Blue Oval would cut its operating costs by US $ 14 billion by 2022. This will mean the abandonment of all the models less than two cars, which will generate another US $ 11.5 billion in savings according to Ford's CFO, Bob Shanks.

Even though the company's revenues increased compared to last year, Ford wants to expand its margins on products that sell well, such as trucks, SUVs and crossovers , and discard everything that it considers "low yield."

"Everything is on the table," Shanks said in a statement to The Detroit News . "We can get out of [some] markets and products, we will do that, that work has really gained strength, we have analyzed every part of the business, it is a very complex task, we are determined to change this business at all times. There is more work going on. "

Ford has declared that almost nine out of 10 vehicles that it will sell in 2020 will be a truck or an SUV, so keep your Focus, Fusion and Fiesta while you can, as long as you are faithful to Ford, because they will not be around for long.

Huawei has announced the availability of the Huawei P20 and P20 Lite in pink gold. The devices will arrive in Spain just for the promotions of Mother's Day that is celebrated next week.

Huawei will sell the P20 and P20 Lite rose gold as a special edition

As explained by the company at a press conference, both phones in pink gold will only be sold in the chain of stores of El Corte Ingles, so they can not be purchased with any operator or other stores.

To encourage the purchase of this device as part of the Mother's Day campaign, El Corte Inglés is offering a discount of up to 50 euros when an old mobile phone is delivered to buy the Huawei P20 - and it also applies to the P20 Pro- and up to 20 euros for the P20 Lite.
Huawei will sell the P20 and P20 Lite rose gold as a special edition

Despite being considered a special edition, the phones in pink gold tone will not be more expensive. They will have the same price of 369 euros for the P20 Lite and 649 euros for the P20. Of course, El Corte Inglés has launched a promotion that allows the acquisition of high-end phones - the P20 and P20 Pro - 24 months without interest, while the P20 Lite can be purchased at 12 months without interest.

El Corte Inglés and Huawei will give the users who purchase the phone during this promotion Bluetooth sports speakers, valued at 60 euros.

You can read here the analyzes of the Huawei P20 , P20 Lite and P20 Pro and even see our comparisons with other phones to make your best purchase decision.

While Huawei in Europe remains in the top three of mobile phone manufacturers, according to the latest data from Kantar,  in the United States the situation is significantly different, because the company has not only encountered obstacles to sell their phones with operators or chain stores, but could also be under official government investigation

Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah

Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah scored twice on Tuesday to help Liverpool clinch an important win against Italian side AS Roma in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final.

The two goals propelled Salah to the top of the scoring charts in Europe, with 43 goals in all competitions.

That tally is better than what both Cristiano Ronaldo (42) and Lionel Messi (40) have managed so far.

Having already broken a few records in the 2017/18 season, Salah last night wrote another piece of history by becoming Liverpool’s highest ever scorer in a single Champions League season, with 10 goals.

Salah also grabbed two assists against his former side, from where Liverpool signed him in the summer.

In total, the Merseyside club put five past Alisson Becker, but also conceded two late goals.

The club will be hoping to avoid the same humiliation Roma put Spanish giants Barcelona through to eliminate them out of the elite European competition. Having lost 4-1 in the first leg, Roma beat the Catalans 3-0 in Rome to ensure they stayed on in the tournament at the expense of Messi’s side.

With three more Premier League games to go Salah also has the chance to write history by becoming the highest ever scorer in a single season. He currently has 31 goals, the joint record he now holds with Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez and Alan Shearer.
In commemoration of World Malaria Day 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners are calling on all concerned parties to be ready to end the scourge of malaria.

We are ready to beat malaria campaign: WHO

This call comes against the backdrop of a global rise in malaria cases for the first time in ten years. The theme of this year’s effort is “We’re Ready to Beat Malaria- Are you?”

According to the latest, ‘’World Malaria Report’’ released in November 2017, 216 million cases of malaria globally were reported in 2016. That’s up from 211 million cases in 2015. The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 445,000 in 2016.

WHO stats also reveal that in areas with high transmission of malaria, children under 5 are particularly susceptible to infection, illness and death. More than two thirds (70%) of all malaria deaths occur in this age group.

Despite the reduction of under 5 malaria deaths from 440,000 in 2010 to 285,000 in 2016, malaria still remains a major killer of children under 5.

Half the world is still at risk from malaria with some countries registering an increase of over 20 percent in malaria cases between 2015 and 2016. Currently, Nigeria has the  highest amount, accounting for 27 percent of global malaria cases.

In the Eastern Mediterranean Region, the number of malaria cases increased from 3.9 million in 2015 to 4.3 million in 2016 with 8200 deaths.  Ninety-five percent (95%) of confirmed malaria cases are reported from 4 countries in the region and 6 countries are at high risk of malaria but are at the stage of burden reduction.  However, two countries in the region, Iran and Saudi Arabia, are both close to eliminating malaria infections in their countries.

But without urgent action, the WHO says most of the major gains in the fight against malaria will be for not.

Together with diagnosis and treatment, WHO recommends a package of proven prevention approaches, including insecticide treated nets, spraying indoor walls with insecticides, and preventive medicines for the most vulnerable groups: pregnant women and children under 5 years old.

The WHO also continues to call for greater investment from national resources and also donors from the infected areas  as well as expanded coverage of proven tools to prevent, diagnose and treat malaria.

It’s expected to cost $1.4 billion USD over the next three years to fight the disease.

This year’s World Malaria Day comes on the heels of two major malaria events – the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting, where UK Prime Minister Theresa May and other Commonwealth leaders made a commitment to halve malaria burden across 53 member countries by 2023 in response to the London Malaria Summit.
Ghana is set to test new malaria vaccine

Ghana and two other African nations will be the first to test what could be the world’s first malaria vaccine.

Ghana joins Kenya and Malawi as test sites for the MosquirixTM vaccine, which acts against Plasmodium falciparum, the most deadly malaria parasite globally, and the most prevalent in Africa.

According to officials, the test will evaluate the feasibility of delivering the required four doses of the vaccine, the vaccine’s impact and whether the vaccine is safe for routine use.

The vaccine is being considered as a complementary malaria control tool in Ghana that could potentially be added to the core package of proven malaria preventive, diagnostic and treatments interventions such as bed nets and indoor spraying with insecticides.

Kezia Malm, Manager of the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP), said Ghana was selected for the trial because of its high malaria burden and well-functioning malaria and immunization programs.

In 2017, Ghana recorded approximately 10.2 million suspected malaria cases in a population of some 30 million people.

Badu Sarkodie, Director of Public health at the Ghana Health service is now calling for concerted efforts by the citizens in the fight against malaria.

“The idea is not just to put malaria down but to end it forever,” he said at an outreach service to mark World Malaria Day.

Ghana aims to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality by 75 percent by the year 2020.  Its ultimate goal is to achieve and sustain near-zero malaria deaths and malaria-free nation.
President Buhari summoned over communal killings by Nigerian lawmakers

Nigerian lawmakers are now demanding to know what President Muhammadu Buhari p[lans to about a recent spate of communal killings.

Hundreds of people have died in clashes this year between semi-nomadic herdsmen and settled farmers in central states, including 16 killed in an attack on a church in Benue on Tuesday.

Legislators voted on Wednesday to invite Mr. Buhari to the House of Representatives to speak with them directly about the situation in Benue, where the highest-profile killings have taken place. Other states in the region, including Taraba, Nasarawa and Kaduna are also experiencing violence.

The killings led the lower chamber of the legislature to pass a vote of no confidence in all security chiefs following the renewed clashes and called for the president to replace them.

Buhari ordered his police chief to relocate to Benue State in particular earlier this year. The police chief sent different formations to quell the violence. The army also announced making deployments to the state to compliment security efforts.

The violence has raised questions about the government’s ability to maintain security in the country, putting pressure on the president less than a year before an election he wants to contest.

No word yet on whether President Buhari has accepted the legislature’s invite.
